Jamaican leaps to technology heights
He may not carry a typical Jamaican name but Dr Kamal Abdur-Rashid achievements have been impressive. In 1997 he left Jamaica for Canada with a PHd in his pocket and ready to put his academic skills into practice
But Kamal Abdur-Rashid faced a number of roadblocks landing a job in his field. His stint at University of Toronto in a volunteer position eventually led to down the entrepreneurial road. In 2004 he launched his own company, Kanata Chemical Technologies (KCT).
With less than 3 years in operation, Kanata Chemical Technologies has grown significantly against the stereotypical “start-up failure”. Dr Abdur-Rashid’s company is an innovator in the field of chemical processing. The company’s pioneer work has help to advance the development of new pharmaceutical and agrochemical products.
Through adversity and with strong determination, Dr Kamal Abdur-Rashid continues to climb the technology ladder.
