I am somewhat surprise by the messed that was created from the Jamaican police investigation of Bob Woolmer's death. At first we were all led to believe that this was a murder. The world media swarmed to Jamaica, not for the glorious sport of cricket, but to confirm the country status of being one of the murder capitals of the world.
For weeks I hung my head in shame as my proud Jamaican heart was jarred by the constant questions being asked by people around me. I even had one stupid question asked “Who do you think did it? Living in New York away from the action, obviously I had no clue or I interest in who did it. All I knew that this was another negative news for Jamaica.
With the cameras and reporters around Mark Shields the Commissioner of Police, oh I meant the Assistant Commissioner of Police, delivered in his clear British tone, statements on the investigation. Members of the Pakistani team were “interviewed” by the Jamaican police.
After a few days, it was evident that the investigation was heading to an Agasta Christie novel. Although not clearly stated, conclusions were drawn that a killer or killers had pounce upon Bob Woolmer, angered by potential release of information on match fixing.
This soon resembled a movie script with professional criminals or mafia style gangs as the centre of the story. In all the confusion, all interest on the cricket was lost. The beauty of the Caribbean and the warmth of its people took backstage to assumptions and ridiculous statements.
So, here we are today finally being told that Bob Woolmer died from natural causes having wasted all the time and attention on what was just pages from a crime novel. The last ball has been bowled, the stumps no longer remain in the ground but for many the memories of 2007 world cup cricket is simply the death of Bob Woolmer.
However my faith in the Jamaican police has been diminished. In a world where technology is readily available, they took months to come to this conclusion. I am sorry Mr Commissioner but your organization has been bowled for duck.
