Jamaicans Cast Their Votes on August 27th
Portia Simpson has blown the trumpet and declared August 27th as the big day for Jamaicans to cast their votes. I spoke to one of my relatives on the weekend and was told that there is a new theme song title “Nyam Dem Out”. I have been searching for this tune but so far I have come up short. For non-Jamaicans the literal translation means “Eat them Out”. A further explanation of this term means “accept all gifts without promises”. (Anyways I find this hard to translate).
However, what my relative went on to say was that many Jamaicans are being encourage to take advantage of the situation and “work” both sides of the fence. So being creative there are some Jamaicans who will ask for “big screen TVs” others will be asking for US Visas. I am sure there will be the more creative few who will receive “bigger things”. What I think will be different this time around will be fewer people asking for their roads to be fixed or schools to be built. There are many people who know fully well that this is “every man for himself”
I am absolutely sure that the amount of money that will be spent in the next few weeks will be significantly greater than past elections. The stakes are very high, both Portia Simpson “the anointed one”and Bruce Golding “the deliverer” have a lot of “chips” on this election. This is not just “wheel of fortune” or “Jamaican Idol”, this is much like the great crusade. Put us in power and we will solve all of your problems.
Like any other Passa Passa, the campaign rallies will have the latest dancehall tunes, including “clash of the mike”. Don’t get me wrong, the Jamaican election is an important milestone but given the years that both party have been in power, I am asking all Jamaicans who go to the polls on August 27th to think about who they vote for wisely, after the big promises, the “heap a food”, “the roll a nannies” or even the big screen TV” how will you judge the winner.
