Prophecy and the Jamaican Election

I have been reading the story carried in the Jamaican Gleaner about Prophet Phinn and his predictions for the Jamaican election based on the “Science of Sevens”. Being the typical sceptic, I had to do some further investigation on my own. I am not sure how to interpret for fear of being chastise. But who is this Dr Phinn? It turns out that he has a long list of qualifications. He is an international motivational speaker, minister, author, and lecturer, advisor, counselling psychologist, businessman, economic and financial consultant and teacher.

His prophecy is based on series of “sevens” that coincide with Portia Simpson being the seventh Prime Minister of Jamaica and other occurrence related to this general election. If one was to treat this as mere occurrence then obviously the amount of attention that surrounded Dr Phinn’s predictions would have been minor. However, aside from making the main newspapers, this is now additional election materials for this campaign. The Jamaican Prime Minister noted in a speech last week that she was the seventh Prime Minister of Jamaica and Jamaica has seven national heroes, hence her reason for announcing nomination day as August 7.

Those of us who are superstitious will take these prophecies out of context but at the same time “words” are so powerful. Politicians will use these statements to gain political mileage. The Jamaica Labour Party and particularly Bruce must be searching for their own version of Dr Phinn.

The stakes are high and losing is not an option, Bruce Golding will need to pull a prophet “from the hat”. His or her qualification should be as long as Dr Phinn. That person must reflect the people, no foreign pastors allowed. This rules out several US Tele-evangelist who maybe looking for business opportunities in a highly religious society as Jamaica. But Bruce cannot use the “numbers” strategy out of fear of copying Portia’s lyrics. So that rules out the obvious strategy.

Unfortunately I have no suggestions for Bruce but this is shaping up to be one “Killa Clash”

I, for one, am very

I, for one, am very disappointed with the significance being placed on Dr. Phinn's nonsense.

I see this as nothing but cheap electioneering on the part of Phinn and Simpson-Miller.

The number 7, in and of itself, has no special significance. In BIBLICAL TERMS the number does have applicable significance, ACCORDING TO THEOLOGIANS - but I see no reference to that (7 being a symbol of perfection) in the Scriptures. You see God creating a perfect world in six days and then BLESSING AND SANCTIFYING the seventh day, hence Sabbath being a holy day - a day God himself calls HIS holy day.

Please note that the Sabbath is holy BECAUSE God sanctified it, NOT merely because it is the 7th day.

My first name and surname each has seven letters. That makes me no special person and no more important than anyone reading this.

None of the following have any special significance.

The 7th week of the year.
The 7th month of the year.
The 7th year of a decade or century.
The song in 7th position on the charts
The athlete placing 7th in a race.
The 7th student on a class list.
The 7 national heroes of Jamaica.
The 7th prime minister.
The 7 letters in the name "Jamaica"
The 7th house or business place on a street

.. and I could go on an on?

Someone is trying to pull a fast one on the Jamaican people and I am particularly concerned that persons would attempt to bring God and things spiritual in their attempt to deceive.

Let's examine a few of Dr. Phinn's prophecies for 2007 "AND BEYOND" as found in his ridiculous article at

http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20070110/news/news1.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Two statesmen will depart this life. One in Jamaica and the other in a nearby Caribbean country.

2.Three prominent Jamaicans will also depart this life.

IF YOU DON'T SEE A STATESMAN AND THREE PROMINENT JAMAICANS DYING THIS YEAR, YOU WILL BE TOLD THE PROPHECY WAS FOR 2007 "AND BEYOND". I CAN ASSURE YOU, MUCH MORE THAN THOSE NUMBERS WILL DIE BEYOND 2007. AM I A PROPHET TOO?

3. Tourism and construction industries will continue to experience growth.

DO WE NEED A PROPHET TO TELL US THAT? SPEAK WITH ANY ECONOMIST.

5. Crime-fighters will have great success in eastern and western Jamaica.

I WONDER, WHEN?

9. Drought in certain parishes.

WHICH YEAR HAVE WE NOT HAD DROUGHT IN CERTAIN PARISHES?

10. A salary increase for teachers.

WOW!! NOW, ONLY A PROPHET COULD FIGURE THAT ONE OUT

11. Cayman Islands will experience a bad flood, unless the people of God there pray to avert it.

THIS IS REALLY FUNNY. FLOODS HAPPEN EVERY YEAR ACROSS THE WORLD. THE CAYMAN ISLANDS IS ALWAYS AT THREAT DURING A HURRICANE SEASON. IF THEY EXPERIENCE FLOODING, PHINN WILL SAY "I TOLD YOU SO". IF THEY DON'T, THEN YOU'D BE TOLD THAT THE PEOPLE OF GOD THERE PRAYED TO AVERT IT. I CAN ASSURE YOU - THIS "PROPHECY" IS BOUND TO COME TRUE, ISN'T IT?

3. A senior politician will resign after the election.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? MY INSTINCTS TELL ME IT WILL BE MORE THAN ONE, OR IS IT THE 'PROPHET' IN ME?

7. Watch the 7th month, a big event for Jamaica.

WAS THERE A MONTH WITHOUT A BIG EVENT FOR JAMAICA? BUT, I WONDER, WHAT WAS THE BIG EVENT IN JULY? THE PAN AM GAMES? THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELECTIONS? OR DID DR. PHINN THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ACTUAL ELECTIONS?

8. In the 5th month, the passing of a major authority figure.

WILL ANYONE OUT THERE TELL ME WHICH MAJOR AUTHORITY FIGURE DIED IN MAY? BY THE WAY, WHO IS A MAJOR AUTHORITY FIGURE?

17. Further reduction in crime.

DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH? NOTE THE WORD "FURTHER".

IF PHINN IS A TRUE PROPHET, I JUST DISCOVERED SOMETHING I DID NOT KNOW. PRACTICALLY EVERYONE IS TOO!

-----------------------------------------

Phinn's and Simpson-Miller's obsession with 7 is nonsense!
