| Billy Taylor speaks with guests at the launch of his book, Cracking the Theft Rings:?The Story of a Cop at the Port of Halifax, at the Sackville Heights Community Centre on Nov. 25. The book focuses on Taylor’s career as a Port of Halifax police officer, and the things he dealt with over the years. |
|
Corruption-fighting cop by day, professional wrestler by night, one of Sackville's most colourful characters has put his story down in ink.
Billy Taylor was a police officer on the Port of Halifax from 1958 to 1989. When he arrived on the waterfront as a young cop, he watched stevedores haul off gutted pigs, watchmen stuff their pockets with stolen goods and even his fellow officers help themselves to "damaged" clothes, plywood or anything else they could get their hands on. More seniors housing, civic events, topics of discussion at public forum
An accessible boardwalk around Penhorn Lake and a mini bus that would travel around Woodlawn.
These are but two of the many ideas presented at the first Penhorn-Woodlawn Community Visioning Public Forum that was held at the Grace Baptist Church last week.
About 35 people attended the community-led initiative that gave residents the opportunity to think about what is possible for their community as a whole, 10, 15 or 20 years into the future. (more)

Is online shopping any greener?
Editors' Note: Over the past year, the Sustainable Transportation Committee of the Ecology Action Centre has put together a series of recommendations for decision makers and the public on how to make the way Nova Scotians get around more ecologically sustainable.
Shoppers are caught in the crossfire of a retail arms race. The battle lines have been drawn. Retailers are fighting over your dollar, and the convenience of "big box" shopping is their weapon of choice. As retail stores grow into mega-centres filled with every product we could possibly desire, the consumer is left wondering how their shopping choices will affect the planet. (more)

What's being done about the city's most dangerous crosswalks?
Using a crosswalk these days in Halifax Regional Municipality has become a risky undertaking. It seems like every other day we read about another car-pedestrian run-in on crosswalks throughout HRM. One young woman tragically died in a downtown Halifax mishap, but the number of fatalities could easily be much higher.
"It's getting darker earlier," says city councillor Dawn Sloane, "and people aren't paying attention again." (more)

Ebenezer's back for another run
Jeremy Webb was out of work, to begin with. It was Christmas 2003 and the Halifax actor decided to emulate his acting hero, Patrick Stewart, and do a stage reading of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
Five years later, he's starting his third full-production run at Neptune.
"I'm 40 now, I now own the set and everything to do with the show, and I figure I might have another 20 or 30 years of playing Scrooge ... if I can survive," Webb joked in a downtown cafe the day of the premier. (more)
