What defines the Jamaican web
It is difficult to count the exact number of Jamaican websites, even more so define what is the “Jamaican web”. Judging by Top5Jamaica.com’s directory, there are more than 3,000 Jamaican related websites. If we use the strictest definition, then the Jamaican web would be developed and owned by a Jamaican with 100% Jamaican content. To take it one step further, the domain name should reflect the Jamaican patios for example whatagwan.com or yawdchat.com.
In reality the popularity of the Jamaican culture limits a strict definition of the Jamaican web. Jamaican website owners may have lost the battle on their control of the Jamaican web, many websites that target the Jamaican culture are owned and operated by non-Jamaicans. The popularity of the Jamaican culture across the globe has resulted in several successful ventures owned and operated by non-Jamaicans. Take for example the number of Reggae music websites, majority of these sites are owned by non-Jamaicans.
The basic definition of the Jamaican web is the site owner’s commitment to providing a positive image of Jamaica whether through music, food or a blog. I have come to terms that although I am a Jamaican, I do not have the sole right of defining or creating Jamaican presence online. I am proud to know that Jamaica extends far beyond our shores and for many people across the world invoke a spirit of fun and lay back attitude.
